7 Tips for Shopping at Your Local Farmers Market

Many KCARD clients sell their products at their local farmers markets. Below are a few tips to keep in mind on your next trip to support local businesses.

  1. Know what is in season and make a plan. It can be overwhelming to go to any market or grocery store without an idea of items you need for your week. Farmers markets are made up of local producers selling products they have often grown themselves. Knowing what foods are in season will help you know what to expect and plan for.

  2. Follow your local market on social media. By following your local market on social media, you will stay in the loop of what vendors will be attending the market and what they will be bringing.

  3. Bring cash, smaller bills are better. Many farmers markets have options for debit card users, but not all. The easiest option is to bring cash in small bills so you can pay the farmer directly.

  4. Bring your own bags!  Many vendors will offer to bag your items but bringing a larger reusable bag will help you manage purchases a little easier. We also suggest bringing either a cooler or a cold bag for items such as milk, eggs and cheese.

  5. Talk to the vendors. Farmers grow a wide variety of produce and are proud of what they have brought to the market. You may find a booth that has five different types of salad greens! Talking to the producer allows you to learn which option best suits your taste buds.

  6. Browse! Walking around the market encourages you to see what products are available. Often, local farmers markets offer more than just produce or meat; you can also find craft or clothing vendors!

  7. Buy in bulk. Learn to preserve the harvest! Buying items such as strawberries or blueberries in their peak season is the best way to assure you are getting the best flavor, so consider buying them in bulk and freezing them to use later. Talk to the vendor about what items are suited for preserving.

Remember, when you shop at your local farmers market, you are paying for a fresher product than what you get at the grocery store. Food from the farmers market will likely be tastier, since it was harvested more recently. It also benefits your local economy by keeping every food dollar local.  For questions or assistance, feel free to please reach out to KCARD at (859) 550-3972 or via email at kcard@kcard.info.
