KCARD Launches Kentucky AgriLegacy Solutions Program to Support Farm Families in Transition Planning
Every family farm has a story—years of early mornings, shared meals, difficult seasons, and decisions made around the kitchen table. These stories shape not only the farm itself but the people who call it home. Yet when it comes to planning for the future, many families aren’t sure where to begin.
The Kentucky Center for Agriculture and Rural Development (KCARD) is proud to announce the launch of the Kentucky AgriLegacy Solutions Program, a new effort designed to equip Kentucky farm families with the tools, structure, and trusted support they need to plan for the future of their farm with clarity, confidence, and care.
“ “At KCARD, we continuously evolve our services to support Kentucky farm families where they need it most. This program represents our commitment to helping producers navigate the future with confidence and strengthen the long-term vitality of Kentucky agriculture.””
A partner to Kentucky Agriculture
For more than two decades, KCARD has served as a trusted voice in agricultural and rural business development across Kentucky. With deep experience in farm management, family business dynamics, and agricultural business structures, KCARD is uniquely positioned to guide families through both the business complexities and personal conversations that come with transition planning.
The Kentucky AgriLegacy Solutions Program helps families start meaningful discussions, explore long-term goals, and move toward developing a thoughtful transition plan. KCARD also assists families in organizing key information before meeting with attorneys, CPAs, and financial advisors, making those professional meetings more efficient and productive.
A Collaborative Effort to Strengthen Kentucky Agriculture
The launch of this program builds on years of partnership and shared vision across Kentucky’s agricultural community. Much of the momentum around transition planning began with the work of Kentucky Farm Bureau, which launched the Kentucky Farmland Transition Initiative (KFTI) in 2024. As part of this initiative, Kentucky Farm Bureau established a network of 28 partner organizations—KCARD among them— to strengthen the future of Kentucky agriculture through collaboration and shared commitment.
The Kentucky AgriLegacy Solutions Program is made possible through funding from the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Helping Families Begin the Conversation
The Kentucky AgriLegacy Solutions Program is designed to make succession planning approachable.
KCARD’s Process
We help families explore three key questions:
Where are you now?
Assessing the current operation, management structure, and family dynamics.Where do you want to be?
Defining a long-term vision for the family and the business. How do you get there?
Creating a clear, actionable plan to move toward identified goals.
Our Support includes:
Starting and guiding productive conversations
Listening and learning about goals, concerns, and family dynamics
Clarifying roles, expectations, and timelines
Developing a practical transition plan
Preparing families for meetings with attorneys, CPAs, and advisors
Connecting families with trusted tools and professional resources
(KCARD does not provide legal advice or draft documents.)
Every transition is different; the AgriLegacy Solutions Program recognizes that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Transition planning doesn’t have to be intimidating; it can be an opportunity to honor the past, strengthen the present, and build a thoughtful foundation for the future. With the launch of the Kentucky AgriLegacy Solutions Program, Kentucky agriculture families don’t have to take that step alone.
