As we celebrate National Farmers Market Week, there’s no better time to highlight the dedicated markets across Kentucky that are strengthening local food systems, supporting small businesses, and creating community. One shining example is the Greenup County Farmers Market, a place where farm-fresh goods and neighborly connections come together under one impressive new roof.
A Community Project with Deep Roots
What started in 2004 as a simple idea by a group of Master Gardeners has blossomed into Greenup County’s only certified farmers market. From its early days as a small gathering of growers ensuring access to fresh produce, the market has steadily expanded to include artisans, bakers, and makers—all bringing unique local goods to the community.
Over the years, the market has reached milestone after milestone, most notably the design and completion of a permanent market pavilion in 2024. Now two seasons in, the pavilion has become a beloved hub for both vendors and shoppers. The addition of a dedicated market manager was another game-changer, opening the door to programs like SNAP, WIC, Senior Vouchers, and Kentucky Double Dollars, ensuring that nutritious food is more accessible than ever before.
Supporting Producers, Year-Round
Greenup County Farmers Market doesn’t just create a space to sell—it builds business capacity. From vendor trainings on booth design and emergency preparedness to social media promotion and a published directory, the market actively supports its vendors’ growth. “We distribute a published directory with vendor contact information and are active on social media with market details and special events that promote off season sales and encourage vendor activity throughout the year,” says the Greenup County Farmers Market Board of Directors. The Market is also a place of connection: vendor collaborations and cross-promotion are now common, with some vendors even growing into successful brick-and-mortar businesses.
A Strong Partnership with KCARD
As the market has evolved, so has its relationship with KCARD. From helping secure Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund (KADF) grant funding for the pavilion to providing technical support, KCARD has been instrumental in the market’s growth. “One of the most beneficial connections we have made with KCARD was partnering with the Business Development Specialist, Terryn Varney. She developed an online survey to be distributed to our vendors and then came to meet with us on location at our market to discuss the results. She also provided next steps and support as these recommendations became part of our market operations,” says the Board.
Building for the Future
The market’s goals are ambitious and rooted in service. Future plans for the Market include infrastructure improvements, additional storage, and welcoming new producers into the fold. With strong leadership from the executive council and support from organizations like KCARD, Greenup County Farmers Market is poised for continued success.
Celebrating National Farmers Market Week
For this market, National Farmers Market Week is more than a celebration—it’s a chance to tell their story. Through flyers, social media, and KCARD resources, they’re reminding the community why shopping local matters and showcasing the faces behind the products.
Why It Matters
Behind the scenes, running a farmers market is a year-round commitment, involving monthly meetings, trainings, and strategic planning. But the reward is clear: stronger farms, healthier families, and a more connected community.
