Marketing Basics Series Part 3: Promoting with Purpose—Sales Strategies & Content Ideas

Promotion isn’t just about visibility—it’s about connecting with your customer’s needs, building relationships, and driving intentional action.

Engaging Content Themes

Craft content that is consistent, useful, and authentic:

  • Farm routines or milestones ("piglets born today!")

  • “How to” guides (storage tips, recipes)

  • ‘Meet the farmer’ or staff spotlights

  • Customer testimonials or user-generated content

  • Seasonal features: preserves in autumn, flower arranging in spring

  • Visual storytelling: photos, short videos, timelapses

Smart Promotions & Value Adds

  • Giveaways & Samples: Encourage trial and generate buzz.

  • Bundles & Add-ons: Offer themed bundles (e.g., salad mix + dressing, flower bunch + vase). Offer add-ons for subscriptions and bundles. This adds value can boost per-sale revenue.

  • Seasonal Promotions: Launch earlybird discounts for CSA, holiday bundles, or farm event passes.

Social Media Best Practices

  • Be consistent & authentic: Share true-to-life content, not just staged images.

  • Use hashtags & tag partners: #FarmFresh, #CSA, plus tag local organizations or chefs.

  • Engage actively: Reply to comments, reshare posts, support other local businesses—it boosts algorithm visibility and community goodwill.

Action Step

Plan a monthly content calendar. For example, schedule 3–4 social posts per week, 1 email, and 1 promotional event or offer. Mix educational content with storytelling and engagement opportunities. Planning out content, even scheduling content, allows for marketing to continue even if life gets hectic.

Marketing Is a Journey—Plan, Test, Repeat

Marketing success requires ongoing effort: test your ideas, track sales and engagement, learn what resonates, and adapt. Start with your strengths—whether that’s your farm story, specialty products, or community connections—and build from there.
